World Car Person of the Year

Is it just us, or is this a strange award?  We can see how, say the Ballon D’Or is chosen for the best footballer (if in doubt, give it to Messi); how an Oscar is won…you get our drift.  But how do you select the best person in the car industry worldwide?

Anyway, 120 of the world’s leading car journalists, including our very own Richard Aucock, Steve Fowler and Mike Rutherford, who all know what they’re talking about, have selected Luc Donckerwolke, Hyundai Motor Group’s Executive Vice President for Design and Chief Creative Officer as the 2022 World Car PERSON of the Year.

The award goes to the one person seen as the most inspirational and innovative leader in their field.

To be eligible, candidates must have made a significant contribution to the global automotive industry with global repercussions during the period January 1 to December 31, 2021. That contribution could include a significant impact to their brand or company, for example, or a significant safety, engineering, design or technical advancement or other significant benefit for the consumer.

Mr. Donckerwolke was chosen because he was responsible for a number of innovative new models, including the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Genesis GV60 and Kia EV6.

Mr. Donckerwolke said, “I am deeply honoured to receive the Person of the Year award and would like to thank all of the jury members and the valued team at Hyundai Motor Group, without whom this would not have been possible.”

So now we know how this works and, let’s be frank. No-one can say that the guy’s work has been less than outstanding.
